Special program: Peter Fletcher

Award-winning classical guitarist Peter Fletcher will perform at the library on May 1 at 7 p.m. This performance is free and open to the public. A reception and light refreshments will follow.

Fletcher, a regular Carnegie Hall performer, is on a west coast tour. Works performed will include Three Dances from Thesarurus Harmonicus by Jean-Baptiste Besard, Lute Suite BWV 996 in E minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, Paduana (from Suite No. 4) by Esaias Reusner, Two Lyric Pieces, Op. 12 by Edvard Grieg, Gnossienne by Erik Satie, and Usher Waltz, Op. 29 by Nikita Koshkin.

A native of Georgia, Fletcher currently resides in New York City. He began playing guitar at age seven and gave his debut concert at 15. He further studied in Master Classes with Jose Tomas and Pepe Romero. In 1988, Fletcher was chosen to perform in a Christopher Parkening Master Class which was broadcast on National Public Radio. Past performance venues include the Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover, DE, Cincinnati’s Memorial Hall, and the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Fletcher has received critical acclaim for his performances. Peter Burwasser of Fanfare Magazine proclaimed, “Fletcher plays it all with a gracious virtuosity that makes for a very pleasing hour plus of unaffected musical poetry.” Additionally, Steven Rings of The American Record Guide stated, “He has a strong technique, a consistent tone, and a strong interpretive imagination.”

His newest recording is titled Peter Fletcher Plays Baroque Music for Guitar and was released in October of 2008. He has recorded five other titles including Music of Four Centuries, The Art of Classical Guitar, and Satie: Guitar Works.
