User Experience Project Update #1: What is it and what are we doing?

Welcome! We're going to start using our blog to give status updates for the Neill Public Library UX Project (User Experience Project).

Aaron Schmidt from Influx Library User Experience has been hired to work with Neill Public Library staff through April 2018 to identify and target ways we can improve user experience at our library. Here’s a great read from Aaron on the importance of user experience.

Last year, Aaron was hired to present workshops throughout the Washington State about library user experience, and is a nationally recognized expert and presenter in the field. He is also the author of the book Useful, Usable, Desirable: Applying User Experience Design to Your Library. His results-based work caught the eye of library director Joanna Bailey and the Friends of Neill Public Library, who invited him to work with NPL.

On January 26 , Aaron facilitated a 4 hour workshop with NPL staff that resulted in eight different target projects being identified.  Subcommittees have been established to explore the potential for improvements in each of the following areas:

  • Service Point Data Gathering
  • Signage/Aesthetic Impact
  • Audio Picture Books/Board Books
  • Reorganizing DVDs by Category/Genre
  • Space Use Analysis
  • Service Pledge
  • Visual Design/Branding,
  • Self Service Holds

We hope you enjoy this sneak peek at what is going on behind the scenes at your library and stay tuned for updates on our current projects. We look forward to sharing exciting and subtle changes with you in the coming months.
